Fear of Trump: Mexico Considers Halting Oil Supplies to Cuba - 1

Mexico is considering halting oil supplies to Cuba, fearing U.S. President Donald Trump's actions following the incident in Venezuela, Reuters reported, citing sources.

President Claudia Sheinbaum's administration fears Mexico could face U.S. reprisals over its oil supplies.

Publicly, Sheinbaum said that Mexico would continue oil supplies to Cuba because they are based on long-term contracts and are considered international aid. However, senior Mexican government sources said that this policy could be reconsidered due to the threat from the United States.

According to the Financial Times, Mexico has become the largest oil supplier to Cuba, overtaking Venezuela by the end of 2025. Last year, the country exported an average of just over 12,000 barrels per day to Cuba, representing about 44% of the island's total oil imports and 56% more than in 2024.

Following the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on January 3, US President Donald Trump said that Washington now "controls" Venezuela and that American companies will revive the Caribbean country's oil industry. He warned that without cheap Venezuelan oil, the communist regime in Cuba is "ready to fall."

Trump also threatened Mexico if it did not stop the flow of drugs to the United States.
