Canada pulls out of trade deal with China after Trump's tariff threat - 1

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said today that his country has no intention of concluding a free trade agreement with China, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.

He said this in response to US President Donald Trump's threat to impose 100% tariffs on goods imported from Canada if America's northern neighbor concludes a trade agreement with Beijing.

Carney said that his recent agreement with China simply reduces tariffs on several sectors.

Carney pointed out that under the free trade agreement with the United States and Mexico, Canada has committed not to conclude free trade agreements with non-market economies without prior notification to other countries.

“We have no intention of doing this with China or any other non-market economy“, Carney said. "What we've done with China is to correct some of the problems that have arisen over the last few years," he added.

China is "successfully and completely taking over" Canada, US President Donald Trump said on Truth Social.

"China is successfully and completely taking over the once great country of Canada. It's so sad that this is happening. I just hope they leave hockey alone!", the US leader wrote.

In another post, Trump wrote that Canada is "systematically destroying itself." A possible deal with China "will go down in history as one of the worst deals of any kind."

On January 24, Trump threatened Canada with 100% tariffs on goods imported into the US if it makes a trade deal with China. He also called Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney a "governor". The American leader added that Carney is "deeply mistaken" if he thinks he can turn Canada into a "transit point" for Chinese goods entering the United States.

On January 23, Trump announced that he had withdrawn his invitation to the Canadian prime minister for the "Peace Council" he is creating. Previously, Carney had said that weaker countries should not "try to get along" with Trump in order to survive, but should unite.

The Republican also said that Canada opposes the construction of the American "Golden Dome" system over Greenland, which would also protect Canada. This, according to Trump, threatens Ottawa with negative consequences.

Canada's rapprochement with China began against the backdrop of disagreements with the United States over Greenland and trade tariffs. At the beginning of his second term, Trump imposed tariffs on his northern neighbor, whose exports to the United States account for 75%. From August 1, 2025, Trump increased the overall tariff on Canadian goods to 35%. From March 2025, the 25% tariff came into effect on most goods.
