Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced that he had provided his US counterpart Donald Trump with a list of drug lords living outside the country and stated the need for joint efforts to pursue them.

„The front line of drug trafficking is occupied by those living in Dubai, Madrid and Miami. I gave their names and those associated with them to President Trump. These are the main leaders. Their money is outside Colombia and we must jointly pursue it in cooperation with the intelligence services of different countries“, he said at a press conference after a meeting with the American leader in Washington.

Petro believes that in order to defeat transnational drug trafficking, the first priority is to apprehend the leaders of the criminal networks, some of whom are Colombians, but they do not constitute the majority.

Trump and Petro held talks at the White House on February 3. After the meeting, the American president announced that they had reached an agreement on cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.

In October 2025, the US Treasury Department announced its decision to impose sanctions on the Colombian president, his wife and his son. Trump claims that Colombia and Mexico are completely under the control of drug cartels. Petro calls accusations of insufficient efforts to combat drug trafficking "unfounded".

US President Donald Trump announced that 50 million barrels of Venezuelan oil were heading to Houston, Texas, in the US.

When asked by reporters in the Oval Office whether he planned to cooperate with Colombian President Gustavo Petro in the fight against "terrorist organizations" in Venezuela, Trump replied: "Well, they want me to do it and we will do it."

"We get along very well with the Venezuelan leadership. We bought 50 million barrels of oil. "It's on its way to Houston now and we're getting along very well with them," the president said, quoted by Anadolu Agency.

He called his White House meeting with Petro "very good."

In early January, Trump announced that Venezuela's interim authorities would transfer 30 to 50 million barrels of oil to the United States. At the time, he said they would be sold at market prices and the president would personally oversee the funds to "ensure they are used for the benefit of the people of Venezuela and the United States."

He instructed Energy Secretary Chris Wright to "implement this plan immediately." The oil, Trump assured, would be delivered to warehouses by ship and unloaded directly in the United States.

Venezuela has the world's largest oil reserves (approximately 17%), but due to mismanagement, nationalization and sanctions, it produces less than 1% of the world's oil.

In early January, Trump said he had discussed the situation in Venezuela with representatives of oil companies before and after the US military operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. He said the companies were interested in entering the country and restoring the oil industry. He also said the United States could benefit from Venezuela's resources.
