A “Hercules“ plane of the Bolivian Air Force crashed last night on a busy street in adverse weather conditions in the city of El Alto, near the capital La Paz, Reuters reported, citing local media.
15 people were killed and at least 30 were injured, fire chief Pavel Tovar said, adding that there were no survivors from the crew, BTA reported.
The plane also hit several cars when it crashed.
The plane was transporting new banknotes to the interior of the country, local channel “Unitel“ reported, citing the Bolivian Defense Ministry.
Footage on social media showed chaotic scenes of people flocking to the crash site, who appeared to be collecting money scattered on the ground after the incident, while local authorities were pushing them away with water hoses. Reuters said the authenticity of the footage could not be independently verified.
The El Alto International Airport has been temporarily closed following the crash, the national airline Boliviana de Aviación said in a statement, adding that the crashed plane was not part of its fleet.
