Five killed in Mexico refinery fire VIDEO - 1

A huge fire has broken out at an oil refinery in the southern Mexican state of Tabasco, killing at least five people, The Straits Times reports.

The fire broke out after heavy rains caused a spill of petroleum materials on the Olmeca refinery grounds, which subsequently caught fire. The exact cause of the fire is currently unclear.

Local authorities are trying to contain the fire front, which has spread beyond the facility's fence.

Olmec is one of the largest oil refineries in Mexico, which began operating in 2024. Although it is new, the facility has been plagued by technical problems, has been shut down quite frequently, and has so far failed to reach its capacity to process 340,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
