US Senate rejects resolution calling for end to war with Iran - 1

The US Senate has rejected a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Iran until Congress approves it, Reuters reports.

The draft resolution was supported by 47 senators, with 52 voting against. One lawmaker abstained from voting.

The resolution was drafted by Democrats. This is the fourth such initiative by Democrats, all of which were rejected by the Senate with a Republican majority.

Among Republicans, only Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky voted in favor of the resolution. Among Democrats, Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania voted against it.

According to the US Constitution, only Congress has the authority to declare war. However, many American leaders believe that this rule does not apply to short-term operations or if the country is under immediate threat.

In early March, both chambers of Congress - the House of Representatives and the Senate - rejected a resolution that would have prohibited President Donald Trump from conducting military operations in Iran without congressional approval. 53 senators and 219 members of the House of Representatives voted against the resolution.
