Putin: Peace proposals from Kiev are "exotic", will not allow sabotage of elections in Russia

The Russian head of state stressed that the strikes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have not achieved a turnaround, and blamed the West for the weapons of Ukraine

Moscow, August 22, 2026 – The proposals for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine coming through mediators are “exotic“ and completely unacceptable to Moscow. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin in an interview with journalist Pavel Zarubin, broadcast on the air of the “Russia 24“ TV channel on the evening of August 22, 2026. He categorically emphasized that Russia remains open to negotiations, but only on the basis of the realities that are forming on the ground.

According to Putin, quoted by the Interfax (interfax.ru) and URA (ura.news) news agencies, it is currently too early to discuss specific clauses that would be included in a future agreement.

Kiev Lets the Genie Out of the Bottle: Economic Collapse and the Role of the West

The Russian leader made a sharp comment on the economic situation in Ukraine, stating that the authorities in Kiev have “let the genie out of the bottle“. The retaliatory strikes by the Russian armed forces, he said, have brought the situation in key sectors of the Ukrainian economy to a critical and catastrophic level. According to him, it is precisely because of these negative trends that Kiev is trying to use intermediaries to find a way out of the crisis that it itself provoked. Putin added that Moscow respects the opinion of international mediators, but decisions will be made in accordance with Russian interests.

The president also revealed that Western countries are directly helping Ukraine modernize and improve its weapons, which are used to attack Russian territory. However, he assured that no strategic turning point has occurred in favor of Ukraine as a result of the strikes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the border or internal Russian regions. On the contrary, the Russian army has increased the pace of its offensive on the front line.

The September 2026 elections and the human cost of the conflict

The domestic political situation in the Russian Federation before the upcoming September 2026 State Duma and local government elections was also touched upon in the interview. Putin accused the Ukrainian side of attempts to intimidate Russian citizens and sabotage the vote through attacks and information and psychological operations. “The enemy is trying to scare us and disrupt the elections. We will not allow him to do this”, he said, quoted by the RT agency (rt.com). To this end, the head of state demanded strengthening coordination between law enforcement agencies and civilian departments, as well as improving air defense systems.

In emotional ending the Russian president described the loss of every single person in this conflict as a “huge tragedy for the country“. However, he declared that dialogue with Kiev can only be based on respect for Russia's sovereign interests and recognition of new territorial realities.
