US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen today warned Chinese companies not to help Russia in any way, France Press reported, BTA reported.
"Companies, especially Chinese ones, should not provide material support for Russia's war against Ukraine, for the Russian defense industry," Yellen emphasized in Guangzhou. She threatened with "serious consequences" those of them who do.
The US Treasury Secretary has been visiting China since Thursday. She is another representative of the administration of US President Joe Biden, who called on Beijing not to help Moscow. China is trying to mediate to resolve the Ukrainian conflict, but has not condemned Russia's full-scale invasion of the neighboring country.
The United States and China will create a forum to discuss balanced economic growth domestically and internationally, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced today, quoted by Reuters.
She announced the news after a meeting in Guangzhou with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. "This exchange will facilitate a dialogue about macroeconomic imbalances, including their relationship to (manufacturing) overcapacity, and I intend to use this opportunity to advocate for a level playing field for American workers and businesses," Yellen said in a statement.
After two days of economic talks in Guangzhou - a southern Chinese city that is a hub for exports - the US Treasury Secretary also announced that she had agreed with her interlocutor to launch a forum for bilateral cooperation in efforts to combat with money laundering.
She described the conversations as productive and frank. The meeting between the US Treasury Secretary and the Chinese Vice Premier lasted more than four and a half hours. They discussed a number of topics, with Yellen's top priority being US concerns over China's growing exports of electric vehicles, solar panels and other goods, Reuters notes.
China's state news agency Xinhua rejected Yellen's argument about production overcapacity, calling it a pretext for protectionist policies by the United States.
