Despite protests in the Iranian society, President Ebrahim Raisi wants to maintain strict police checks for violations of women's clothing rules in the Islamic Republic, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

"Observing the norms of head veiling is not only a religious, but also a political and legal obligation for women in Iran," Raisi said. Therefore, "there is no doubt" that the successive checks must continue, added the ultra-conservative leader, quoted by the press center of the presidential office.

After the arrival of the Persian New Year on March 20, Iranian police and morality protection authorities have again strengthened punitive measures against violations of women's clothing rules, DPA notes. Videos on social networks even show checks that escalate into clashes between women and moral police officers.

The death of Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian woman of Kurdish origin, in police custody in September 2022 sparked nationwide protests against the Islamic regime. Amini was detained by the morality police for allegedly wearing a hijab improperly. A few days later, she died at the police station. Her death is said to have occurred as a result of police brutality.

Since then, more and more Iranian women have ignored the obligation to cover their faces in solidarity with Amini. Some religious circles in Iran have also criticized strict police controls. They are convinced that women cannot be turned into pious and devoted Muslims through violence.
