US forces in Iraq and Syria were the target of two missile attacks and drones in less than 24 hours, Iraqi security sources and US officials told Reuters, marking the first such announcement in nearly three months.

At least one drone was fired at the Ain al-Assad air base, which hosts US troops in Iraq's western Anbar province, a US official said.

This followed five rockets fired from northern Iraq at US forces at the Rumalin base in northeastern Syria on Sunday, according to US and Iraqi officials.

There were no reports of casualties or significant damage from the attacks.

Almost daily missile and drone strikes against US forces began in mid-October and have been claimed by a group of Iranian-backed Shia Muslim armed groups known as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which were motivated by US support for Israel's war in Gaza.

The attacks stopped in late January under pressure from Iraqi authorities and Iran following deadly retaliatory US airstrikes in Iraq after three US soldiers were killed in a drone attack on a small base on the Iraq-Jordan border.
