Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky does not expect his country to join NATO during the war with Russia, reported DPA.
"In my personal opinion, we will join NATO only after we win," he said today at a joint event with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.
All 32 NATO members must agree to accept a new country. Several countries have expressed concerns about the risk of Ukraine joining the alliance, worried that their own troops could be drawn into direct conflict with Russia, DPA recalls.
"For Ukraine to be accepted into the alliance from a political point of view, it needs a victory," Zelensky said.
In 2019, Kyiv wrote the goal of NATO membership into its constitution. Preventing Ukraine from joining the alliance is one of Russia's stated military goals.
