Saudi Arabia appointed today a new ambassador to Syria, Reuters reported, citing BTA, citing The Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
This is the kingdom's first envoy to Damascus since the embassy was closed in 2012 during the Syrian civil war.
Saudi Arabia's embassy in Syria resumed operations earlier this year after the two countries cut diplomatic ties more than a decade ago. Syria opened its embassy in Riyadh last year and appointed a new ambassador there in December.
The renewal of relations between Riyadh and Damascus marks the most significant development by Arab countries towards normalizing relations with Syrian President Bashar Assad to date, notes Reuters.
