The mayor of a Mexican city was attacked and killed by gunmen on Monday, shortly after the election of the first female president since the the bloodiest election campaign in the country's history, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.
Yolanda Sanchez, mayor of the city of Cotia in the state of Michoacán since 2021, was shot 19 times in the center of the city, local press reported.
She and her bodyguard - who was also shot - died of their wounds in hospital later on Monday. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
"A number of threats were made to the municipal staff,... requesting that the mayor prevent or avoid the execution of the tasks assigned by the federal forces,", Michoacán Chief Prosecutor Adrián López Solís said.
Such demands could not be met by the mayor, the state attorney general said, adding that there were disputes between criminal gangs for territorial control around Cotia.
Sanchez has already been kidnapped by the "Jalisco New Generation" drug cartel. in 2023 during a visit to the neighboring state of Jalisco.
During the campaign for Mexico's general election, which ended on Sunday, 39 political candidates were killed.
