British Foreign Secretary David Cameron has been the victim of a fake video call with a person who introduced himself as former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, the Foreign Office reported, quoted by BNR.

The British Foreign Office has decided to reveal what happened in order to avoid any attempts to manipulate the content. A Foreign Office spokesman said that although the video call clearly appeared to be from Poroshenko, the foreign minister became suspicious after the conversation. When the caller asked for contact details, Cameron stopped answering.

The spokesman said the short call was made in recent days, but did not say when, who was behind the scam or how the fraudster was able to contact Cameron directly.

„Despite regretting his mistake, the foreign minister believes it is important to bring this case to light and increase efforts to counter the use of disinformation,”, the spokesman stressed.

Petro Poroshenko was president of Ukraine between 2014 and 2019. During his tenure as Prime Minister, David Cameron had numerous contacts with the Ukrainian leader, including at international summits.

This is not the first time Mr Cameron has fallen victim to a scam call. In 2015, Downing Street was forced to review security procedures after an impostor posing as the then director of the government's monitoring agency, Robert Hannigan, managed to contact the prime minister directly.
