The U.S. Armed Forces have increased security measures at European bases bases, ordering military personnel to be more vigilant and discreet, due to a combination of threats throughout the region, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.

European Command said in a statement today that "a number of factors impact the safety of US military personnel overseas.

Raising the threat level to "Charlie" was the result of a combination of events unfolding across Europe, including elections in France and Britain, the upcoming Olympics and other major sporting events, and the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, said two U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity. However, they said they did not know if it was a specific threat.

The threat level of "Charlie" is the second highest on the scale of the US Armed Forces and is entered "when an incident occurs or intelligence receives information about possible terrorist activity or attacks against US military personnel and bases".

Raising the threat level to "Charlie" means introducing additional security measures at US military bases, but it is up to each individual commander what they will be. It also means that service members and their family members who live in base complexes must be vigilant and try not to attract too much attention, said one of the officials interviewed.
