A heat wave covers the Western Balkans from today, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius on different points, local media reported, quoted by BTA.

Temperatures along the Adriatic coast will reach 36 degrees today, reports the Croatian State Hydrometeorological Institute, quoted by the Croatian national television HRT. People with health problems, children and pregnant women are warned not to walk outdoors.

From tomorrow, the heat wave is expected to spread to the interior of the countries of the Western Balkans. A yellow heat code has been announced today in three Croatian regions – Rijeka, Split and Dubrovnik. A code orange comes into effect tomorrow, and from Wednesday – red.

The Serbian Hydrometeorological Institute warned today that the heat wave is likely to continue throughout the week, and temperatures will reach 40 degrees, reported “Index”.

In Kosovo, the heat is accompanied by a sand wind and citizens are advised not to go out in the sun.

In Albania, where temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius, the government warned today that “intentional or accidental fire” will be punished with 15 years in prison.

The authorities in the respective countries recommend avoiding going outdoors between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. People with health problems, children and pregnant women, the elderly, people with heart problems and diabetics should be especially careful. In case of dizziness, weakness, expressive thirst or headache, medical help should be sought.

The Croatian Hydrometeorological Institute recommends keeping a cool home and body temperature and drinking enough fluids, but avoiding alcoholic, sugary and caffeinated drinks. It is good to have frequent and smaller meals and to avoid food rich in proteins.

The recommended temperature in the home is below 32 degrees during the day and below 24 degrees at night. This is especially important for children, adults over 60, and people with chronic illnesses. Bathing with lukewarm water, wearing light, loose, light-colored clothing, as well as hats and sunglasses are recommended. The use of a cream with a sun protection factor is also recommended. It is good to avoid physical exertion.

During the latest heat wave in the Western Balkans on June 21, there was a power outage in Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Albania.
