The accession of Ukraine to NATO would cause a global conflict, said the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, the European edition of Politico reported, quoted by Focus.
„Membership of Ukraine in NATO is only a guarantee of World War III”, Fico assured in a video on Facebook, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
These comments came shortly after Slovakia, a NATO member since 2004, participated in the NATO summit in Washington. The Slovak delegation supported the opinion that Ukraine is firmly on the path to joining the alliance.
However, Fico clarified his directive to Slovakian representatives at the summit, insisting that Ukraine be accepted only after it meets all the necessary criteria and receives unanimous approval from all member states.
Slovakia's prime minister, serving his fourth term since 2006, also made headlines with his pledge to end military aid to Ukraine, controversially saying there was "no war" in Kiev.
In addition, Fico expressed his desire to team up with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán following Orbán's recent visit to Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
