Biden has coronavirus, man arrested for threats against US president in Florida - 1

US President Joe Biden has given a positive a sample for COVID-19, the chairman of UnidosUS (UnidosUS) said yesterday – a Latin American organization for civil rights, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.

The activist broke the news at an event in Las Vegas where Biden was scheduled to speak.

White House press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre announced the positive test of the 81-year-old head of state.

„He has been vaccinated, given a booster dose and has mild symptoms, said Jean-Pierre.

Biden "will return to Delaware, where he will self-isolate and continue to fully fulfill all his duties,", Jean-Pierre also said.

Meanwhile, a man was arrested in the US state of Florida for making threats against Joe Biden, days after the assassination attempt on his Republican rival Donald Trump sparked strong criticism of the security services, authorities said yesterday, AFP reported , quoted by BTA.

A native of Quincy, Florida, the 39-year-old man was arrested for “sending threatening messages and making threats against President Joe Biden and other federal officials,” prosecutors said in a statement.

According to the state prosecution, the man broadcast his threats online and made them when he was admitted to a mental institution last month. He was arrested on Monday and is in pretrial detention pending trial.

Republican candidate for the presidential election in November Donald Trump was the target of an assassination attempt on Saturday during an outdoor campaign event in the state of Pennsylvania.

A participant in the rally was killed, and the shooter – liquidated by Secret Service snipers, who are responsible for the protection of senior American political figures.

Since the attack, this security service has come under a lot of criticism.

Democratic President Joe Biden, a candidate for re-election, ordered an independent investigation to determine how the shooter could have ended up so close to the former president.

Democrats aim to hold a virtual vote for President Joe Biden's nomination in the first week of August, while he has rejected calls from some Democrats to drop out of the race after his disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump, reported the Associated Press, quoted by BTA.

The Democratic National Convention Rules Committee will meet Friday to discuss its plans and finalize them next week, according to a letter sent to party members and obtained today by The Associated Press. The letter states that the virtual vote will not take place before August 1, but the party is still committed to holding a vote before August 7 – the Ohio state registration deadline.

In May, the Democratic Party announced it would hold early roll-call voting to ensure Biden qualified for the ballot in Ohio, where the deadline was originally August 7, but the state has since changed its rules. Biden's campaign has argued that the party should work under Ohio's primary rules to ensure that Republican lawmakers cannot mount legal challenges to prevent a vote for President Biden.

The letter comes a day after a group of U.S. House Democrats, wary of a quick nomination of Biden as a presidential re-election candidate, released another letter expressing "serious concern" about the plans for virtual roll call voting. That letter to the Democratic National Committee, which has not yet been sent, said it would be a "terrible idea" to silence the current debate about the party's candidate by early roll call voting.

"This could undermine the spirit and unity of Democrats," said the letter, obtained by The Associated Press.

The Democratic National Convention is scheduled for August 19-22 in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
