New British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will host a major European summit today. He will use the forum to give fresh impetus to relations with Europe, but also to push for better protection of the continent's external borders as part of London's efforts to stem the increased migrant flow to Britain, the Press Association (PA ) and DPA cited by BTA.
Starmer, who will host today's European Political Community (EPC) summit, has called for Europe-wide action to tackle "channel networks".
As part of the forum, which will take place in Oxfordshire, southern England, he will participate in a session dedicated to migration, which will be co-chaired by Italy's right-wing Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni.
Leaders from the 47-member EPO are meeting in Britain amid efforts by Starmer to recharge his country's relations with its European neighbors after the chaos that accompanied the Kingdom's exit from the EU.
The new British Labor government wants to conclude a security pact with the European Union and is determined to strengthen the support of European countries for Ukraine in its war with Vladimir Putin's Russia.
"We should not allow the challenges of the recent past to determine the shape of our relations in the future. "That is why European security will be central to the government's foreign policy and defense priorities - and that is why my focus is fully on using the moment to rebuild our relationship with Europe," Starmer said. "(The meeting of) the EPO will launch this new government approach to Europe that will benefit not only us now but also future generations - from breaking up human trafficking networks in Europe to opposing Putin's barbaric actions in Ukraine and destabilizing activity across Europe."
