US President Joe Biden's announced withdrawal from the presidential race is expected to be a major topic at today's meeting of European Union foreign ministers and comes amid concerns across much of Europe over the possibility of Donald Trump winning a new presidential term, reported DPA, quoted by BTA.

The main topics on the agenda of today's regular meeting of foreign ministers are the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, but Biden's historic decision is likely to dominate the negotiations in Brussels.

Relations between the EU and the US have deteriorated under Trump's first term, and within the bloc there are worries that his second term will have major consequences for the war in Ukraine, global trade and European security in general.

Not all member states share these concerns, given the current political shift to the right, as evidenced by the European Parliament elections early last month.

One of the first to react to what happened last night was the Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk, who on the social network “X“ praised Biden for “the many difficult decisions that have made Poland, America and the world safer and democracy stronger”.

At the other end of the political spectrum, Geert Wilders, the leader of the Dutch far-right Freedom Party, posted a photo of Donald Trump raising his hand after last week's assassination attempt with the caption “President Trump”.

Attention at the meeting is also likely to focus on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who earlier this month met with Trump and before that with the presidents of Ukraine, Russia and China — Volodymyr Zelensky, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.

Hungary took over the EU's rotating presidency in early July, but a number of top European officials and member state leaders have distanced themselves from Orbán's self-proclaimed “peace mission”.
