Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that he had an excellent conversation with Austrian Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner, whom he met today in Belgrade, Tanjug reported. Issues related to regional security were discussed, especially in view of the security challenges of Europe, which are becoming greater due to migratory movements caused by wars and regional conflicts, BTA quoted.
Vucic expressed his gratitude to the Austrian state for partner support in the implementation of border protection measures and reiterated Serbia's commitment to strengthening cooperation in this area. The Serbian president has indicated that the increased migrant wave is putting enormous pressure on border control and immigration systems, which has increased the focus on national security of most countries, but also the need for closer cooperation and information exchange to be found on - an effective solution to the migrant crisis.
Speaking about the current situation in the region and the world, Vucic specifically emphasized that the current geopolitical tensions and military conflicts in general have led to an increased risk of terrorism and radicalization, as well as that such dynamics of events further complicate security measures and require a coordinated approach to how immediate national security issues are addressed.
Serbia's Vice President and Minister of the Interior, Ivica Dacic, also met today with Gerhard Karner, after which an official meeting of the two delegations took place, attended by the Austrian ambassador in Belgrade, Christian Ebner, and the Serbian ambassador in Vienna, Marko Blagovic.
