The Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico called on the Mexican government on Wednesday to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), if he arrives in Mexico for the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Claudia Scheinbaum, reported France Press, quoted by BTA.
"We trust the Mexican government to comply with the international arrest warrant" to Putin and that he would "turn him over to the UN judicial body in The Hague" if he arrives for Scheinbaum's October 1 inauguration, the Ukrainian embassy said in a statement.
In March last year, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin, who is accused of war crimes because of the deportation of children from the occupied territories of Ukraine to Russia, AFP recalls.
Mexico is one of the signatories of the Rome Statute, under which the ICC was established. According to the Rome Statute, each of the signatories has the obligation to hand over to the ICC anyone who is responsible for international crimes.
The Ukrainian embassy described the Russian president as a "war criminal" who should be held accountable for the invasion of Russian forces in Ukraine in February 2022. At the same time, the Ukrainian diplomatic mission thanked the Mexican government for inviting the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to attended Claudia Sheinbaum's inauguration.
Ukraine's reaction is related to the Mexican authorities' invitation to Putin to attend the inauguration ceremony.
The future foreign minister of Mexico, Juan Ramon, emphasized on Wednesday that the invitation to Putin is more of a protocol.
