After the Island riots: King Charles called for unity and understanding - 1

King Charles called for mutual respect and understanding following racist riots against Muslims and migrants in Britain, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said. This is the monarch's first reaction since the riots began last week, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.

The King thanked the police and other emergency services for their work during the unrest and hailed the way community groups had countered "aggression and criminal activity by a handful" persons, the spokesman said.

"His Majesty remains hopeful that the shared values of mutual respect and understanding will continue to strengthen and unite the nation," the spokesman said after Charles spoke by phone with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and police chiefs.

Thousands of law enforcement officers will remain on duty over the weekend in case unrest resumes after the three-day lull.

They erupted after false posts appeared online claiming the alleged killer of three little girls in a July 29 knife attack in Southport, north-west England, was an Islamist migrant.

In the 1970s, Charles founded the charity "The Prince's Trust" (Princes Trust), which has helped millions of young people to find work and to implement community projects. She continued to work - including in areas affected by the unrest - even after he was crowned monarch.
