More than 150,000 residents of Japan's Aomori prefectures , Iwate and Yamagata were advised to evacuate to safe places due to the approach of Typhoon Maria, which hit the coast of the northeastern Tohoku region on Monday morning, TASS reported.
Thus, in Aomori, more than 23 thousand residents of the city of Hachinohe received a recommendation to take shelter in evacuation centers. In Iwate, more than 130 thousand people received similar messages in the villages of Kuji, Tanohata, Iwaizumi and others.
Some of the recommendations were later lifted for almost 50,000 residents of Iwate, but similar measures were strengthened in other settlements.
Typhoon Maria is located over the eastern part of the Tohoku region and will cross the island of Kyushu to the coast of the Sea of Japan by Monday evening. According to meteorologists, the speed of wind gusts in the typhoon area reaches 25-35 m/s.
86 flights have been canceled due to the typhoon, rail operators are warning of possible train cancellations or delays, and ferry services have been suspended.
