At least one person was killed and 16 were injured this morning in airstrikes in Lebanon, the country's Ministry of Health reported, as quoted by DPA and BTA.
Lebanese security forces said the strikes were carried out in the Bekaa Valley, near the town of Baalbek in northeastern Lebanon, near the border with Syria. The area is known as a stronghold of the Lebanese Shiite movement “Hezbollah”.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the strike targeted weapons depots and air defense systems of “Hezbollah”.
Secondary explosions erupted after the strikes, which the IDF says means there were significant amounts of weapons on the ground.
In a separate incident, Israeli aircraft struck military sites of “Hezbollah” in southern Lebanon in response to shelling carried out from the area.
The IDF also announced that earlier in the day “military sites of “Hezbollah”, from which the terrorists were operating in the Matmura region of southern Lebanon”, were struck.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that four people were killed and two others were wounded in an Israeli attack on the town of Deira, located one kilometer from Matmura.
„Hezbollah“ reported last night that three fighters from the movement had been killed, but did not specify the time or place of their deaths. According to Lebanese security sources, the militants were killed in an attack on Deira in southern Lebanon.
Since the beginning of the war in the Gaza Strip more than 10 months ago, there have been dozens of armed clashes between the Israel Defense Forces and “Hezbollah” and other groupings in the border area between the countries.
Casualties were reported on both sides, most of them members of “Hezbollah”.
