A man suspected of attacking passers-by with knives was shot today in the city of Moers, West Germany, reported France Press, quoted by BTA, referring to the German police.

The agency recalls that this comes just days after a deadly knife attack in the nearby town of Solingen.

At around 14:45 (12:45 GMT) today, emergency services received a call that a man had attacked and threatened several passers-by in the city, Duisburg police said in a statement.

The employees found and tried to detain a 26-year-old German, but he attacked them with two knives. Officers fatally shot the man, but no one else was injured, law enforcement said.

The incident comes as Germany is on high alert after three people were killed and eight injured in a knife attack at a street festival in Solingen, about 45 km from Moers, on Friday.

The detained alleged perpetrator is a 26-year-old Syrian, suspected of ties to the "Islamic State" group.

Paying tribute to the victims, Chancellor Olaf Scholz yesterday promised to tighten German gun laws, "especially with regard to the use of knives". Scholz said that the strengthening of the control will be started very quickly.

The attack in Solingen has reignited the country's immigration debate and put further pressure on the chancellor ahead of key regional elections on Sunday.

The alleged attacker was due to be deported to Bulgaria - the first European Union country he arrived in - but appears to have easily avoided deportation attempts.

Yesterday, Scholz said that Germany "will do everything in its power to have people who cannot and should not stay in Germany be returned to their countries and deported.
