Bangladesh caretaker government lifts ban on Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami - 1

The caretaker government of Bangladesh lifted the ban on the Islamic party "Jamaat-i-Islami" and related groups, Reuters reported. According to the government, no evidence was found of their involvement in terrorist activities, quoted by BTA.

The previous government, led by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed, banned the party through an anti-terrorism law, accusing it of inciting violence during student protests against the quota system for civil servants. The protests escalated into an uprising that forced Hasina to resign and flee to India.

Bangladesh's caretaker government sent a letter to the media saying there was "no concrete evidence of involvement of the party and its affiliated organizations in terrorist activities". The party rejected the allegations of violence and condemned the ban as "illegal, extrajudicial and unconstitutional".

"Jamaat-e-Islami" remains barred from running in elections in Bangladesh after a court ruled in 2013 that its registration as a political party was against the country's secular constitution. The party's lawyer, Shishir Monir, announced that at the beginning of next week, a representative of the party will apply to the Supreme Court to restore its right to register.
