US prosecutors have indicted leaders of "Hamas" because of the attack against Israel on October 7, reported Reuters and France Press, quoted by BTA.

Yahia Sinwar, who became the head of the Palestinian Islamist movement after its previous leader Ismail Haniya was assassinated in the Iranian capital Tehran in late July, allegedly by Israel, and five others are accused of masterminding the attack, in which killed over 1,100 people and about 250 were taken hostage in the Gaza Strip.

Earlier, the Israeli army threatened to liquidate Sinuar.

More than 40 people who had American citizenship were among those killed in the October 7 attack.

"As stated in our complaint, these defendants, armed and receiving political support and funding from the government of Iran, and with support from (the Lebanese group "Hezbollah") - spearheaded attempts by "Hamas" to destroy the state of Israel and kill civilians in the name of that goal,'' US Attorney General and Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.

Three of the six leaders of the Palestinian Islamist movement in question were indicted posthumously, as they had since been killed by Israel. Apart from Ismail Haniya, the other two are the head of the military wing of "Hamas" Mohammed Deif and his deputy Marwan Issa, whom the Israeli army announced it had killed in July and March respectively.

The living leaders of the Palestinian Islamist movement indicted are Yahya Sinwar, as well as Doha-based Khaled Meshaal, who is in charge of relations with the Palestinian diaspora, and Lebanese exile Ali Barakah.
