According to US and European officials, Iran sent ballistic missiles with Russia's short range — a move that gives Moscow another powerful military tool in its war against Ukraine and follows stern warnings from the West not to provide those weapons to Moscow, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The development comes as Russia has stepped up its missile attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, killing dozens of civilians in recent days. Washington briefed its allies on the Iranian supplies this week, European officials said, including at a briefing for ambassadors in Washington.
The American publication did not provide detailed information on the number and types of missiles received by Russia.
Earlier, the British agency Reuters, which was the first to report on the upcoming transfer of ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia, indicated in its article that these could be Fath-360 - a system that launches ballistic missiles with a maximum range of 120 km and a 150-kilogram warhead.
The European Union has already promised to respond to the transfer of ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia. The British agency reported in August that representatives of the Russian Defense Ministry had signed a contract with Iranian officials in Tehran on December 13 for the Fath-360 and another ballistic missile system built by Iran's state-owned Aerospace Industries Organization (AIO), called Ababil. according to European intelligence officials.
Citing multiple confidential intelligence sources, officials said Russian personnel visited Iran to learn how to operate the Fath-360 system.
