Portugal has been rocked after a 12-year-old boy attacked and six children were wounded with a knife in a rare case of such violence at school in the Iberian country, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.
Portuguese police said the injured were aged between 11 and 14, and the attack took place at a school in Azambuja near Lisbon.
A boy was seriously wounded in the chest, but his life is not in danger, announced the mayor of Azambuja Silvino Lucio. It was taken to a hospital in Lisbon.
The mayor added that five girls had minor injuries on their hands.
The attacker has been detained, the law enforcement authorities announced. So far, the motivations for the attack are unknown.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro condemned the attack and wished a speedy recovery for the injured children in a post on the X social network. He described the case as an "isolated attack", which is extremely rare for his country.
"This is an isolated act and an unusual phenomenon for Portuguese society, but regardless, it should make everyone who works in the public space think,", Montenegro wrote.
