Viktor Orban's right-hand man: We wouldn't fight the Russians if we were in Ukraine - 1

If he were in Ukraine, Budapest would not go to war with the Russians. This was stated by Balazs Orbán, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's chief aide, "Politico" reported. He was a guest on a podcast on Wednesday where he talked about the war in Ukraine.

In the words of Orbán's aide, "every country has the right to decide its own destiny and the leaders take responsibility" and pointed out that if what happened to Ukraine had happened to Hungary, Budapest would not have started a fight against the aggressors - a lesson learned in 1956, Balazs Orbán pointed out.

"We probably wouldn't have done what President Zelensky did two and a half years ago, because it's irresponsible, because obviously he put his country on the defensive from war, all these people died, all this territory was lost - again, it's their right, it's their sovereign decision, they had the right to do it. But if they had asked us, we wouldn't have advised him," he said.

The opposition in the country has already called on the political director to resign.

The leader of the center-right party "Tisa" Peter Madjar said: "With these words, Balazs Orbán humiliated the memory of thousands of Hungarian freedom fighters, hundreds of whom - unlike Balazs Orbán — were ready to sacrifice their lives for the freedom and independence of their country".

The leader of the center-left Democratic Coalition, former prime minister Ferenc Durcany, wrote in a Facebook post: "The Orbán government will hand over Hungary to the Russians without a fight.

According to Balazs Orbán, however, there is a lesson in this chapter of Hungary's history (Hungarian Uprising of 1956 - note ed.) and it is: "We have to be careful here and we have to be careful with the very precious Hungarian lives. You can't just throw them out in front of others."

After his resignation was requested, Viktor Orbán's aide defended his speech, saying that "Hungary's position is clear: we see no point in the Ukrainian-Russian war", in which hundreds of thousands of people have died "for nothing".
