The leader of the far-right Austrian Freedom Party ( APS) Herbert Kickle said last night that he is seeking to lead the country's new government as chancellor – days after his political force won the parliamentary elections, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
The APS received 28.8 percent of the vote in Sunday's election, ahead of the conservative Austrian People's Party (ANP) with 26 percent and the Austrian Social Democratic Party with 21 percent. However, the APS will have difficulties in forming a workable coalition agreement because the other parties refuse to cooperate with it or Kickle.
„The result is a clear mandate to deliver Austria five good years,” he declared. “Our hands are outstretched”, he added, referring to the coalition negotiations.
According to Kickle “coalition of losers” would be undemocratic and a slap in the face of Austrian voters.
After holding exploratory talks with Kickle on Friday, the country's president, Alexander von der Bellen, plans to speak with the leaders of the other parties, including Chancellor Karl Nehammer of the ANP and the leader of the Social Democrats, Andreas Babler, in the coming days.
