Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán called today on Hungarians to resist against Brussels, as they did against the Soviet army in 1956, AFP reported, quoted by BTA .
"Should we yield to the will of a foreign power, this time Brussels, or should we resist it? Hungary is now faced with this difficult decision. I propose that our answer be as clear and unequivocal as it was in 1956," he told thousands of people gathered in a Budapest park.
Orbán speaks on the anniversary of the outbreak of the Hungarian Uprising – a rebellion against the government of the Hungarian People's Republic and its pro-Soviet policies that began on October 23 and was put down 12 days later by Red Army tanks and troops.
According to the Hungarian leader, Brussels wants to make his country a "puppet state, a vassal". The heroes of 1956 failed, but we will win, Orbán declared.
"We know they want to get us into a war. We know they want to force us to accept their migrants. We know they want to instill gender ideologies in our children," he added.
AFP notes that Orban is the only EU leader with close ties to the Kremlin and regularly criticizes Western support for Ukraine. Today he went even further, hinting at the danger of a Ukrainian advance on Hungarian territory. Denouncing the "Victory Plan" presented last week by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the prime minister warned: "One morning we Hungarians will wake up and find soldiers, Eastern Slavs, on our land."
