Counter-strategy: EU discusses reducing Chinese support for Russia - 1

China, as the country that provides the most support to Russia in the war against Ukraine and is actually an accomplice, poses a serious threat to many countries. Sino-Russian relations play a crucial role in the current geopolitical context, in which Beijing controls Moscow and, in its own interests, allows the Russian-Ukrainian war to continue. According to MEP and former commander of the Estonian army, Lieutenant General Riho Terras, the EU urgently needs a strategy to counter China's aid to Russia.

„China supports Russia because the current situation is extremely advantageous for them. They are taking advantage of this period of uncertainty, but I am confident that they are watching Russia to prevent an escalation of the conflict. I don't think China wants to escalate the war”, Gal quoted the politician as saying.

The basis of Sino-Russian relations is the provision of both direct military aid and dual-use goods used in the production of weapons and military equipment to Beijing. In return, Russia provides China with military technology and access to natural resources. China's involvement in military support for Russia has recently increased, which is cause for concern.

Terras added that the EU is already working on developing a strategy to counter China's support for Russia, but the important issue is the need to maintain economic relations with China. The strategy requires a cautious approach to avoid damaging economic relations with Beijing.

Politicians in other countries also support the idea of a similar strategy. Finland's Green Party leader Atte Harjane stressed the need for this strategy because China's economic support for Russia allows the Kremlin to finance a bloody war. Pavel Fischer, former head of the defense committee of the Czech Senate, called for China to be recognized as a direct accomplice of Russia in the international arena.

The Western response to China's intervention in the war continues, but its slowdown is having an impact on various fronts where the Russian occupiers are advancing. However, experts note that developing a strategy to counter China's support could change the situation.

The EU is preparing to increase pressure on China in early 2024 after the end of Hungary's presidency of the EU Council. In addition, from January 2024, Poland, a staunch supporter of Ukraine, will take over the presidency of the EU Council, which could accelerate the process of introducing new sanctions against Russia and its allies.
