Serbian Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesic officially will resign tomorrow after the visor of the station in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad collapsed on Friday, killing 14 people and seriously injuring three, BTA reported.
„Tomorrow I will present my resignation to the prime minister”, Vesic said at a press conference in Belgrade, broadcast live by the Serbian Tanjug agency. He added that he offered his resignation to Vučević as early as Friday, when the tragedy occurred, and he also informed President Aleksandar Vučić of his intention.
Vesic emphasized that he does not accept the blame for the incident, but resigns as the person responsible. “I cannot accept the blame for the death of 14 people, as neither I nor the people who work with me have an iota of responsibility for the tragedy,” said Vesic.
Minister Vesic is among the representatives of the government, whose removal was demanded by a part of the opposition, activists and citizens who protested yesterday in front of the government building and the Ministry of Construction in Belgrade, notes the Serbian edition of Radio Free Europe.
The public is still not aware of the reasons for the collapse of the concrete visor of the station in Novi Sad. The prosecutor's office in Novi Sad questioned 40 people in the case until November 3, including Vesic.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said today that he is confident that the competent state authorities will find out who is responsible for the tragedy. The railway station in Novi Sad was inaugurated in July this year after a three-year renovation, with authorities claiming that the concrete visor over the station's main entrance was not covered by the renovation.
