The far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AzG) called on the newly elected US President Donald Trump to make an address to the European Parliament, DPA reported, referring to a letter with which it was acquainted, writes BTA.
A similar speech by Trump would show a “strong commitment to revitalization” of EU-US relations, says the letter to the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Mezzola, dated November 12.
AzG, together with other far-right parties, constitutes the group “Europe of sovereign nations” in the European Parliament with headquarters in Brussels and Strasbourg.
The letter was signed by René Aust, German MEP from AzG, and Polish MEP Stanisław Tischka, in their capacity as co-chairs of the parliamentary group. Another AzG MEP, Christine Andersson, a member of the group's executive committee, also signed the letter.
Initially there was no public reaction to the letter from the speaker of the parliament. Metzola's team stated that she always considers all proposals from political groups in the European Parliament, DPA reported.
Mezzola's team also indicated that they have an open and open-ended invitation to current US President Joe Biden.
In other political groups of the European Parliament, there is widespread concern about the electoral victory of Trump's Republicans and the imminent end of Biden's mandate.
Fears are that the Trump administration could freeze military aid to Ukraine and force the country to negotiate major concessions to Russia.
Economic relations between the EU and the US may also deteriorate again in view of Trump's first term.
