Cuba's national power grid collapsed early this morning, reports "Reuters".
The accident happened after the largest power plant in the country broke down. Millions of households plunged into darkness.
In the past two months, there have been several similar large-scale accidents in Cuba. The Caribbean country's power generation systems have fallen into disarray amid fuel shortages, natural disasters and an economic crisis.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines announced that work is underway to reconnect the electrical system.
Abandoned oil-fired power plants in the country have struggled to keep the lights on for decades. This year, however, the system fell into crisis due to a drop in oil imports from allied countries - Venezuela, Russia and Mexico. Persistent power outages lasting hours have become the norm for much of Cuba.
