German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said after a telephone conversation with Donald Trump that he confident that he will be able to reach an agreement with the newly elected US president on a common strategy with Ukraine, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
„I am convinced that we will develop a common strategy for Ukraine. My guiding principle remains that nothing can be decided without giving the voice to the Ukrainian people, said Scholz during an interview with the newspapers of the “Funke” media group.
He added that his team is in direct contact with Trump's advisers.
Ukraine is shaping up to be an important issue in the election campaign for the early parliamentary elections to be held in February in Germany, after the ruling coalition in Berlin collapsed last month.
The leader of the opposition German Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz, who may replace Scholz as chancellor, said that Germany should send Ukraine "Taurus" cruise missiles. Scholz is against such a decision, pointing out that it could escalate the war.
Earlier this week, Scholz announced new military aid to Ukraine during a visit to Kiev, which he said sends a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that Berlin will help Kiev in the war as needed.
