French President Emmanuel Macron said today in Warsaw that it is necessary to find a way to peace in Ukraine, which takes into account the interests of both Kiev and the Europeans, reported France Presse, quoted by BTA.
„The administration of Donald Trump has expressed a desire to try to change the course of this conflict, so we have to work very closely with the Americans and obviously with Ukraine to find a possible path that takes into account the interests of Ukraine, its sovereignty and the interests and security of Europeans”, Macron said at a joint press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The French president stressed that the only possible peace in Ukraine will be “sustainable peace” and that any peace agreement must respect the interests of Ukrainians.
Macron arrived in Warsaw to discuss European support for Ukraine with Polish Prime Minister Tusk, just weeks before Poland takes over the EU presidency from Hungary, according to Reuters.
In his speech, Macron said that recent reports of Russian interference in elections in Georgia and Romania show that Europe needs to strengthen its capacity to counter hybrid attacks.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk assured that there are currently no plans to send foreign troops to Ukraine after a possible agreed ceasefire. Tusk specified that the decision on the participation of Polish troops will be made in Warsaw.
„We will work with France on a solution that will above all prevent Europe and Ukraine from resuming the conflict if an agreement is reached,” Tusk said.
The Polish Prime Minister said that after his meeting with Macron it was clear that the two countries “are on the same team” regarding the war in Ukraine and European security.
The French president also commented that “today Europe is not moving at the right pace and is not ambitious enough”. He called for a short schedule and determination on the part of the European Commission for more effective actions.
Macron also opposed the free trade agreement between the European Union and South American Mercosur countries, stressing that European farmers cannot be “sacrificed”.
„It is very clear that our farmers will not be sacrificed in the name of mercantilism of the last century,” he declared.
