Ten people, including four children, died in a stampede in the Nigerian capital Abuja after a large crowd gathered to collect food items distributed by a local church at a Christmas event, local police said, quoted by the Associated Press and BTA.
The stampede occurred early in the morning at the “Holy Trinity“ Church in “Maitama“, an affluent area of Abuja, with more than 1,000 people evacuated from the scene, police spokeswoman Josephine Ade said in a statement.
It is the second such stampede in Africa's most populous country in the past week, as local organizations, churches and individuals increasingly organize charity events as the Christmas holidays approach, amid the country's worst economic crisis in a generation.
