New York police have arrested a man suspected of setting a sleeping woman on fire in the New York subway, BTA reported.
The woman was on a subway train that had stopped at the Coney Island-Stilwell station in Brooklyn yesterday morning. Then an unknown man approached her and set her on fire with his lighter. There was no altercation between the two and police do not believe they knew each other. The man fled the subway train, and patrolling officers noticed a person burning inside. They used fire extinguishers to put out the flames but were unable to save the woman.
Police are still investigating the motive for the attack and the identity of the victim.
The New York City subway system carries 4 million passengers a day. Nine people have been killed on the subway so far this year, up from five the previous year, although violent crimes on the city's subway system are relatively rare.
