The Council of Ulema of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Russian Federation withdrew the theological conclusion (fatwa) “Problems of Polygamy in the Muslim Community in Russia“, which allows religious polygamy.
This was announced on Monday, December 23, by the Chairman of the Council, Shamil Alyautdinov, on his Telegram channel.
"In connection with the information that appeared in the media that the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation calls for the cancellation of the fatwa “The problem of polygamy in the Muslim community of Russia”, as well as in connection with the reaction of the Russian public, the Council of Ulema of the Muslim Muslim Community of the Russian Federation withdraws the fatwa. This is God's will and the Council of Ulema of the Muslim Spiritual Administration of the Russian Federation sees no point in entering into a controversy“, the publication it published says.
On December 19, the Council of Ulema of the Muslim Spiritual Administration of the Russian Federation issued a fatwa according to which Muslim men could conclude up to four religious marriages. It defined a list of reasons for which an additional marriage may be concluded, as well as the conditions under which religious polygamy is permitted.
On December 23, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation submitted an application to the Chairman of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims in connection with the fatwa issued by the Council of Ulema, the Russian state agency Interfax reported, citing its sources.
„According to the provisions of Article 1 of the Family Code of the Russian Federation, marriages concluded only in civil registry offices are recognized in the Russian Federation. "Any form of restriction of citizens' rights in marriage and family relations, including on the basis of religious affiliation, is prohibited," the journalists quoted their interlocutor as saying.
