Employees of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported loud explosions heard on January 5 near the Ukrainian Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZAPP). The information was confirmed in an official statement from the agency, quoted by Focus.
"The IAEA team located at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant reported that it heard two powerful explosions outside the perimeter of the site at around 12:45 and 15:45," said Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi. Machine gun fire was also heard several times near the plant.
According to reports, the explosions coincided with reports of a suspected drone attack on the plant's training center, located outside the main perimeter of the site. The IAEA confirmed that there were no casualties and no damage to equipment at the nuclear plant itself.
Grossi expressed serious concerns about the nuclear safety of Europe's largest nuclear power plant and called for enhanced protective measures in the region.
