Hungary will reopen its embassy in Damascus after the armed conflict in Syria has significantly subsided and the security situation has stabilized. This was announced today by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó in a statement on "Facebook", quoted by the MTI and BTA news agencies.
“Hungary's presence in the country will provide access to reliable information on the ground and will allow us to present our political position. In addition, we will be able to protect the interests of Hungarian citizens if necessary", Szijjártó said.
The minister stressed his country's commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East, noting that Hungary pays special attention to Christian communities in the region. He confirmed that Budapest continues to provide humanitarian aid and strongly supports the respect of their rights.
The Hungarian ambassador to Syria is the first and so far only Western diplomat to have met with the leaders of the two largest Christian denominations in the country. They thanked Budapest for its support for Syrian Christians and for the “solidarity – rare among European countries in these uncertain times”, Szijjártó added.
