Belgian police have arrested a knife-wielding attacker who tried to break into the Belgian federal government building in Brussels, local media reported, quoted by BTA.

Negotiations on the formation of a new government are currently underway in the building, involving leading political figures. The area has been cordoned off by police, authorities said.

A government spokesman said the detainee had been taken in for questioning. No law enforcement officers were injured. According to him, the outgoing Prime Minister Alexander de Croo is safe, but is deeply shaken by the event.

It is expected that the mandate holder Bart de Wever will be received again by King Philippe tomorrow to receive a new postponement for presenting the results of the negotiations. According to local media, it is possible that the coalition negotiations, which began after the elections in June last year, will be successfully concluded by the end of January.
