Poland's presidential election to be held on May 18 - 1

The first round of Poland's presidential election will be held on May 18, the speaker of parliament said, quoted by Reuters and BTA.

The vote is expected to be a crucial test for the pro-European government and its program.

The presidential race will pit Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, candidate of the "Civil Coalition" party, against and a close ally of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, against historian Karol Nawrocki, director of the Institute of National Remembrance, who is supported by the conservative "PiS" party.

If none of the candidates wins more than 50% of the vote in the first round, a second round will be held on June 1, analysts note.

A feature of this election campaign is that it will take place during Poland's six-month presidency of the European Union, which will put the country at the center of important international and domestic political debates, Reuters notes.
