The European Commission announced that it is allocating another 140 million euros in humanitarian aid to Ukraine. So far, the total amount of European humanitarian aid to the Ukrainian country since 2014 has reached 1.1 billion euros, the announcement notes.
Nearly 12.7 million people are in need of urgent assistance in Ukraine, and the funds provided today will support needs including food, shelter, clean water and healthcare in eastern and southern Ukraine. The Commission will also provide humanitarian aid to Moldova for 8 million euros to support Ukrainian refugees sheltered there.
The EC added that EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Haja Labib is visiting Kiev today and is expected to be received by President Volodymyr Zelensky and other representatives of the Ukrainian authorities. The talks will address urgent humanitarian needs and the strategic distribution of EU aid.
Labib visited the EU medical evacuation centre in the Polish city of Rzeszow on her way to Kiev. The Commission said that under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, around 4,000 seriously ill Ukrainians have been transported for treatment to neighbouring countries in the last two years.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the EU has provided over 150,000 tonnes of aid, including power generators, medical equipment, temporary shelters and water purification equipment, the Commission added.
