A student at the Belgrade University Law Faculty was seriously injured today after a car plowed into student protesters in Belgrade, Serbian national broadcaster RTS reported.
Serbian students have been protesting and staging blockades in Belgrade and other Serbian cities for weeks after a concrete canopy at the Novi Sad train station collapsed and killed 15 people in November.
Today, a car plowed into students protesting in front of the Belgrade Law Faculty, hitting the girl and moving for a while while she was on its roof. The girl then fell to the street.
The student was seriously injured and is currently in hospital receiving treatment. Her condition is stable.
The driver of the car has been arrested and will remain in custody for up to 48 hours. The Serbian Supreme Prosecutor's Office has charged him with attempted murder. It is believed that there were two other people in the car, one of whom is a minor.
Hundreds of students gathered today for a spontaneous protest in front of the Law Faculty in Belgrade in support of the injured student.
Citizens across Serbia have stopped and observed silence for 15 minutes almost every day as part of anti-government protests in the country and demands that those responsible for the tragedy in the northern Serbian city be punished.
Traffic blockades have been in place every day since November 1 at exactly 11:52 a.m., when the canopy of the Novi Sad train station building collapsed on people below, the Associated Press notes.
