At least 17 people were detained while trying to enter the Western District Court without permission, where a hearing is being held on the need to extend the detention of President of the Republic of Korea Yun Seok-yeol, reported the ag. Yonhap.

Around 5:30 p.m. local time, a man climbed over the fence surrounding the courthouse. He was detained on the spot. The citizen demanded that the president be released. Then 16 more people climbed over the fence in the courthouse area. They were detained. It is believed that these are supporters of the president.

There is a rally of supporters of the president outside the courthouse demanding his release from detention. According to police, about 12,000 people are participating.

The meeting to extend the arrest began at around 2:00 p.m. local time. Based on the experience of similar hearings with former presidents, it is assumed that the resolution of the issue may drag on until late at night.

On January 15, the current president of the Republic of Korea was arrested for the first time in the country's history. The arrest warrant was issued after Yoon Seok Yeol failed to appear for questioning three times. South Korean law allows for the prosecution of the current head of state under articles of rebellion and treason. Due to the events of martial law, Yoon Seok Yeol is suspected of organizing the uprising as the leader of the conspirators. On December 14, the parliament removed him from office due to martial law, but until the decision of the Constitutional Court, his powers are considered terminated.
