The US will most likely impose sanctions on Russia if President Vladimir Putin refuses to negotiate to end the war in Ukraine.
This was stated by US President Donald Trump.
He is ready to meet with the Russian leader "whenever it is convenient for him."
“Whenever he wants“, he said at the White House in response to a journalistic question.
Trump called Putin "smart" and suggested that he had disrespected former US President Joe Biden.
He did not provide details on possible additional sanctions.
The US president added that the EU must do more to support Ukraine.
The US president indicated that the issue of the conflict in Ukraine had been discussed during his recent contacts with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
When asked whether the new US administration would continue to supply weapons to Kiev or was considering stopping them altogether, he replied: “We will look into this issue. We are in contact with Zelensky. We will talk to President Putin very soon. We will see what happens.“
